Abstract

This article highlights the prerequisites for the development of school pedology in the Soviet period: the understanding of the intrinsic value and uniqueness of childhood in the philosophical, psychological, and scientific knowledge of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries; the development of school education and the accumulation of empirical data on school teaching and upbringing; the need for a scientific justification for a new model of school education–the Unified Labor School–and the possibilities of mass education and upbringing in uniform schools. A definition of school pedology is provided and the problematic field of this area of pedagogical research is outlined.
